Hong Kong Human Rights News Repository
The Hong Kong Human Rights News Repository organises and categorises Hong Kong news related to human rights issues within a unified framework. Drawing on the United Nations’ thematic classification of human rights issues, the digest groups news items under four overarching domains—(1) Civic Space and Democracy, (2) Justice and the Rule of Law, (3) Equality and Non-Discrimination, and (4) Living and Developing with Dignity—along with 32 thematic areas. For definitions of these domains and themes, please refer to our methodological overview.
Due to limited resources, the Repository currently covers news items under 21 of the 32 themes within the four domains, including:
1. Civic space and human rights defenders, 2. Democracy, right to participate and the electoral process, 3. Digital space and human rights, 4. Freedom of assembly and of association, 5. Freedom of expression and opinion, 6. Business and human rights, 7. Coercive measures, 8. Education and cultural rights, 9. Children and youth, 10. Freedom of religion, 11. LGBTI people, 12. Persons with disabilities, 13. Racism, xenophobia & intolerance, 14. Gender equality and women’s rights, 15. Administration of justice and law enforcement, 16. Death penalty, 17. Detention, 18. Disappearances and executions, 19. Slavery and trafficking, 20. Terrorism and violent extremism, 21. Torture, Cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment
This database has been collecting Hong Kong human rights news since 19 August 2023. It currently contains 1,206 news report entries. The most recent update was on 31 December 2025, and the database is updated on a monthly basis.
